Infrastructure

Division of Fire Safety Engineering

The Fire Laboratory at the Division of Fire Safety Engineering at Lund University has a long history in fire science and in the education of fire safety engineers. The Fire Laboratory is located on the Lund University campus and primarily used for education and research performing fire tests in smaller scales. If larger test is required, we use the possibility to run experiments at larger scales at one of the rescue training facilities.

In house expertise

Our staff has wide experience and knowledge in fire safety engineering. Our research areas include fire modelling, evacuation, virtual reality, extinguishing systems, fire properties, and more.

Equipment

Examples of available equipment include:

  • Cone calorimeter (ISO 5660, ASTM E1354, ASTM E1474, ASTM E1740, ASTM F1550, ASTM D6113, CAN ULC 135 and BS 476 Part 15, amongst others)
  • Micro combustion calorimeter (ASTM D7309 Method A & B)
  • Lateral ignition and flame spread apparatus (LIFT-apparatus: ISO 5658-2, IMO Resolution A.653(16), ASTM E 1317 and ASTM E 1321, amongst others)
  • COI (Critical Oxygen Index: ASTM D 2863)
  • Plunge test (RTI, Response Time Index in sprinkler heads: FM 3210)
  • A third-scale ISO 9705 room for Room Corner Test
  • Medium scale laboratory for studying tunnel fires as well as behaviour and properties of products and materials exposed to tunnel fires. Total length of tunnel geometry 66 meters with a cross section of 2x2,4 m (wxh)
  • Mini-furnace for fire resistance and material testing, volume 0,5 m3

Fire behaviour and properties

The burning behaviour of materials or items varies in different environments. This can be examined in our labs in addition to calculations and simulations.

Typical user

Authorities, institutions, companies etc. that have interest in fire behavior and fire properties of materials and items in large scale fires as well as at lab scale.

Fees

Depending on project, a benchmark fee is 4,000 SEK for half a day.

Safety

All users will have a dedicated introduction and safety course before working in our laboratories.
